Music video techniques

In this task we where asked to talked about artist music video that show good and bad techniques.

Large amount of Cuts (Good)

The music video to Chris Brown "Love more" ft Nicki Minaj has 124. This is a lot for a typical music video, because in a normal music video you expect to see about 100 shots. The intended effect for using a large amount of shot in a music video is to make the music video more exciting, by showing more images in each shot. You will typically see lots of shot in a fast, upbeat song. So a large amount of shots will match the beat of the song. So over all the intended effect of using lots of shot will be to, match the beat of the song and, make the music video more exciting. This technique has been successful because the large amount of shot matches the paces of the song and. The impact and effect it has on the viewers is that, it allows the audience to visually feel the song and visually feel and understand what the atmosphere is like in the location of the music video, which is a club in this music video above. By having lots of cuts in a music video, it represent the artist as being fun and young, which connotes that their music will be very fast and up beat.

Small amount of shots (Bad)

This music video by Whitney Houston "I will always love you" has 88 shot with is a small amount of shot. The intended technique for using little amount of shots could have been due to trying to show the emotion of the song more. So with a little amount of shot it connotes that the song is a very calm song, that you need to listen to very carefully to understand what the meaning is. But the technique may not have been successful to some people because they might get bored in watching the same shot for a long time, which will put them of the song and even the artist. The impact this has on the audience is that it may make them get bored watching the music video which could lead to them disliking the artist. By having a small amount of shots it could represent the artist as been, an artist that sings slow love songs, that have a lot of meaning in it.

Special effects (Good)

In this music video by Rihanna "Rude Boy" it has lot of special effects. This are very interesting to look at. The intended effect of using special effects in a music video is to make the music video interesting to look and, and to show things that you cant really do in real life. So in this music video Rihanna used lots of different colors and reflections of herself in order to draw the audience into the music video so that they keep on watching it. She also used special effects to do somethings she cant really do in real life. At 3:11 Rihanna is standing next to a lion. Special effects allowed her to do this. This technique has been successful because it does not over the power the audience and make them keep watching due to the abstract images she has used. The impact and effect it has on the viewers is that, it make the audience carry on watching because their is a lot of colors and images to take in. Also due to the song being very up beat it will make the audience want to dance to the song which will make the audience enjoy the song better. By having good special effects in a music video it can represent the artist as being artistic and outgoing, because special effects will will either make a music video look good or very bad. So by an artist using them it will show confidence.

Special effects(Bad)
In the music video from Kanye West "All of the lights" He used Special effects in music video. This is an example of bad use of special effects. This is because even though the effects of lot of lights matches the song lyrics, it is too many effects at once and to much flashing lights, and the audience gets distracted by all of the lights. instead of actually listening to the lyrics that, have a strong meaning to it. The intended effect is for all of the effects which are lights, to match the song title and meaning. The technique was not effective because it distracts the the audience from the meaning of the song, because all the lights, are to over powering when looking at them. By using this kind of effect it represents the artist as being very artist and their music as unique and up tempo.

Cutting to the beat (Good)
In this music video by Olly Murs "Dance with me tonight" it show good use of cutting to the beat. The intended effect of this technique to to make the song to song better and also to make the actually music video look better. The technique has been success because Olly has listened to the beat of the song carefully and has used make his cuts.  From 1:20 - 1:40 you will hear a drum being hit, and each time it is hit their is a cut. By doing this it allows the audience to hear the beat of the song much better, and it also allows the audience to enjoy watching the music video, because it matches the song. By cutting to the beat it represents the artist as someone who takes time in making music and who has been going so for a long time or works with people who has.

Cutting to the beat (Bad)
In this music video by Jordin Sparks "One step at a time" it shows bad use of cutting to the beat. The technique was not successful because as you hear the beat their is not real cuts that match it. from 0:20-0:40 you hear a a drum being hit every 1 second, so to match the beat a cuts should happen every time the drum it hit, but in the 20 seconds i looked at i only counted 11 cuts. This mean that the artist did not cut to the beat. The impact this has on the viewers is that it does not allows them to hear the beat of a song a cleanly as if she was cutting to the beat. By not cutting to the beat it represents the artist as being inexperienced, and has no real understanding of music.

Varied camera language (Good)
In this music video by Drake "Find your love" it shows good use of varied camera language. This is because it has lot of different shot types and angles. The intended effect of this technique is to make the music video look more interesting and to connotes Drakes emotion at the a specific time. The technique has been success because, it uses lots of different shot type and angle all time a small amount of time. which brings the story of the music video to life and makes it more interesting to watch. In the first 20 seconds of the music video we see a over the shoulder shot, long shot, establishing shot and a close up. By having varied camera language it keep the audience interested in the music video, which will keep them watching. By doing this is represents the artist as being very creative and connotes that they are passionate about music and love to telling a story thought the use of the camera.

Varied camera language (Bad)
In this music by Justin Bieber ft Nicki Minaj "Beauty and the beast" it shows bad use of camera language. This is because for most of the music video Justin is holding the camera himself. The intended effect of this was to make the music video seem more personal, and a way of Justin to being closer to his fans. But this did not work to well because after a while I felt that the same camera shot got really boring, and did not allow me to appreciate the song and music video. The impact this has on the audience is that seems as if they are watching the same things and it does not tell a story really well, so even if Justin was trying to tell a story, it does not get across to the audience because it just as a few shots in the music video. By having very little camera language it represents the artist as being very different and still someone who is leaning what type of music videos are the best to do.

Green Screen (Good)
In this music video by Chris Brown "With you" It shows good use of green screen. The intended effect of using this technique is to make the artist look like they are somewhere, but they are really not. At 2:40 till 3:20 we see bits where Chris Brown is sitting in the middle of the road and cars at high speed are going past him. Green screen allowed him to do this. The technique has been successful because it looks very really and you don't see any green screen. The impact his has on the audience is that it get them thinking, about how the artist did it. It also brings the lyrics that the artist is signing at that moment to life and it get across to the audience much better. In this moment Chris is singing about how he would die is he doesn't have the girl he wants. So by him saying it in the road it connotes that he will get run over it he does not get the girl. By doing this it represents the artist as being very creative

Green screen (Bad)
In this music video by Lil Wayne ft Nicki Minaj "Knockout" it shows a bad use of green screen. The intended effect in this music video is for Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj to be in a locker room and a boxing ring. The technique was not successful because it look very fake and it the setting they are in is too small in regards to their height. At 0:28 both artists are standing next to a locker, and they look really tall, which make it look fake. The impact this has on the viewers is that it make the audience fell uncomfortable and it does not really get the meaning of the song across to the audience so they don't understand the meaning of the song.  By doing this it represents the artist as being not very artistic and creative. Also it makes the artist look like they have not really thought about the music video properly, and it looks very rushed.

Lip-syncing (Good)
In this music video by Nicki Minaj "Freedom" it shows good lip-syncing. The Intended effect of this technique is for it to look like the artist is actually singing in the music video, when really they are not. The technique has been successful because it really looks like Nicki Minaj it actually signing in the music video. From 0:01 till 1:00 in some shots Nicki is standing outside in the song with black hair. In these shots it the technique has really been successful, this is because she shows emotion when singing and she uses her hand movements to make it look like she is really singing. The impact this has on the audience is that it make them feel like are actually listening to the artist live and it allows them to be drawn into the actually music video more. By doing this technique properly is represents the artist as being very talented, and connotes that the artist spends a lot of time and care in their music video.

Lip-syncing (Bad)
In this music video by Nelly ft Kelly Rowland "Dilemma" it shows bad use of lip-syncing. The technique has not been successful because in some part of the music video the artist lips do not match the sound. At 1:08 till 1:13 when Nelly is singing his lips don't match the sounds. Also sometimes Kelly Rowland does not shows enough emotion when singing, which just reinforces the fact that she is lip-syncing. at 0:32 till 1:08 Kelly is just sitting on a step and just moving her lips. she has not hand movements and only a little head movement. This does not sell the idea that she is actually singing. The impact this has on the audience is that it makes them fell like they are watching to different things, which will lead to them not understanding the music video, because the video and song will not match. By doing this it represents the artist as being unprofessional and lad back with their music.
