Goodwin's ideas about Music Videos

Andrew Goodwin is a media theorist who came up with the theory which was stated in his book called 'Dancing In The Distraction Factory', which he published in 1992. The theory states that there are 6 different elements that make up a music video. Goodwin's theory allows us to analyse or compare a music video in depth and cover all the vital elements that a music video will contain or be a part of. It allows us to see trends and connections between genre and content. The six different elements within Andrew Goodwin's theory are:

1) A relationship between the lyrics and visuals with the visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
2) A relationship between the music and the visuals with the visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
3) Genre-Related style. So a type of genre will differ in the style of the music video that is created.
4) Star image. This is when multiple close up are shots of the main artist. Meaning that through the music video it will have lots of shots of the artist making sure the artist are the main focus of the video
5) Voyeurism. This is shown in many different music videos, especially in the treatment of women, but also it can be used in the term of, system of looking.
6) In-textual references, either to other music video's or to films or TV texts.

Visuals Illustrating the lyrics

This is when the lyrics the singer is singing tie in with the movement or a still in the video. This is also called interpretive when the visual things you can see in the video link or emphasis what the singer is saying. An example of an artist who uses this in their music video is Beyonce with her song 'Single Ladies'. In the song at 0:31 - 0:35 she sings "If you like it you should have put a ring on it'. When she is singing this you can see that she and her dancers are pointing to their fingers. Implying that a man should out a ring on it. Also at 0:10 Beyonce sings "So put your hands up" and say she says "up" she and the dancers put both of their hands up in the air. Also at 1:06 Beyonce songs "Acting up up" she does this while sitting down, and then when she says "up,up" she stands up. This video proves that Goodwins theory is correct with the use of visual and lyrics linking together. The use of this concept in Beyonce's music video is to draw the audience in by not only the lyrics but also with the actions and dancing she does in this music video.

Visuals amplifying  the lyrics

Amplification is designed to enhance the style and mood of the song, for example, If the visuals shows sadness, the audience is meant to feel the emotions of for the song. One example of this is Leona Lewis Run. The song is about accepting the loss of a loved one, and throughout the music video we see visuals that amplify the meaning of sadness. For example in the whole music video from 0:01 - 4:51 we see Leona in a black dress which connotes death and sadness. Also the background she sings on is very dull and mysterious; this again amplifies the theme of the song which is sadness. This impacts the audience by allowing them to feel and see the emotion of the song and the emotion of the lyrics, that the artist is singing. The audience might not understand the words to the song, due to the accent of the artist of the words that they use. But the visuals will amplify the meaning in order to let the audience understand the meaning on the song.
Visuals contradicting  the lyrics

Contradicting in music videos is when the visuals in the video does not relate to what the lyrics are saying. An example of a contradicting music video is MGMT Kids. The visuals show a baby being tortured and scared by monsters which is upsetting scene, but the music itself is very up beat and happy. At 2:17 the lyrics say "we like to watch you laughing" and the baby is shown crying and upset. This is am example of contradicting. The costumes worn throughout the video also contradicts the lyrics. This is because the song is very happy and jolly, but the costumes are very scary. This is very contradicting. Also you would first think the video will have children playing around however this is not what it does have in it. At 2:00 the lyrics say "crawling on your knees" the visuals whilst this is being said the woman is actually carrying the baby. The video itself makes the audience feel sad and on edge about the baby, they begin to feel sorry for the baby and actually ignore the beat and lyrics of the song. This is very unsettling for the audience which makes them wonder why it was filmed the way it has been filmed.

Iconography

Iconography is when certain visuals or image triggers a more broad association with a topic.   such as individual elements relating to a genre of musics or the artist. An example or this would be Nicki Minaj Beez in the trap. This is because the genre of music this song is, is Rap. In the music video we see visuals that associate with rap. For example at 0:47 we see Nicki Minaj and two girls, dresses in very little, which is a convention of a rap music video. Without listening to the lyrics we will know that it is a rap video due to the girls in very little clothing. Also another convention that is associated with a Rap music video is at 0:49 we see a man counting money. This is a very strong convention of a rap music video. Also through out the whole music video, they cut back to scenes in a club. This enforced the fact that the music video is a rap music video. Also iconography are elements that relate to the actually artist. For example Nicki is well known for wearing crazy wings. So at 1:21 we see Nicki wearing a bright green wing. This allows the audience to identify, that Nicki is in the music video. Iconography impact the audience because it allows them to understand the genre of the music video better, due to the visuals that they see.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when one media refer or relates to another source of  media. In my case it can be done by a music video having context in it that relates to media source. An example of a music video which has intertextuality would be Taylor Swift Love Story. In the music video she is referencing the movie of Romeo and Juliet. At 1:05-1:09 Taylor sings "Romeo take me somewhere where we can be alone,..." This is a clean reference to Romeo and Juliet, because she says "Romeo" Also from 0:50 - 1:22 we see the two main actors, dancing with each other at a ball. In the film for Romeo and Juliet the first time the two lovers meet is at a ball dance, in a hall. So the music video has clearly adopted this idea. Also at 1:25 - 1:29 Taylor says "i sneaks out to the gardens to see you". This is again intertextuality because in the film for Romeo and Juliet, Juliet sneaks out in her garden to see Romeo. Intertextuality has a very strong impact of the audience. This is because by referring to another source of media in a music video, i will allow the audience to understand the meaning on the song better. She relating it back to my example, because we all know that Romeo and Juliet were very much in loved, by Taylor referring to them in her music video, the audience will relate the two and understand that the two characters are very in love.

Voyeurism

Voyeurism refers to the use of staring at someone or something, and is the system of looking. Laura Mulvey came up with the "Male gaze" which is how men look a women in a film or in my case a music video. In modern times males are sexualised and women have power, but prier to this often men had all the power and women where just there to be looked at. An example of voyeurism in a music video is 50 Cent Candy Shop. This is because in the music video we see many shots of women dressed in little clothes, being very seductive. An example of this in the music video is at 0:27 till 0:35 we she long mid and close up shots of women in a house, dressed in little clothes. Also from 1:39 till 2:00 we see women dressed in red doing a sexy/ seductive dance. Also of this will attract the male attention, which will make them watch the whole music video.

Close Ups

The record label will demand lot of close up of the artist or band, in order for the audience to feel closer to the artist or band, and also in order to get the artist visual appearance across to the audience, so when they see the artist or and next they will know who they are. An example of a music video that uses many close ups is, Rihanna Take a bow. In the whole video there are 21 close up. An example of there a close up is, is at 0:12. All you can see is her face. This allows the audience to full known who Rihanna is, and it feels like she is talking to the audience. Also at 1:00 we see another close up. This again makes the audience feel like Rhianna is singing to them. The overall impact close ups have on the audience is that is makes the audience feel like they part of the music video, and that the artist is singing and involving them in the video.

$99 Music Video

In this task I have been asked to do research on my client for my music video. My client is 99dollar Music Video.

What is 99dollarmusicvideo.com?

$99 Music Videos show music videos from today's best independent bands and up and coming filmmakers, all made with a budget of under $99.The company believe that there should be a close link between the film maker and the artist. The company is an independent networking site which helps up and coming acts be the best of today’s music scenes. The network was created by Jack Ferry and other main members apart of the crew. $99 is a website which allows independent bands/artist who have attempted to team up with film makers creating a new and original music video which the website will promote. The company change the video every week, which allows more peoples videos to be shown. However because anyone can get involved with this they set certain rules. The company provides $99 for artists who are not signed to create a good and creative music video with a filmmaker featured on their website.

What is there ethos?

99dollarmusicvideos.com have an ethos which mean that they have certain rules when making a music video. The music video must be made for $99 or less. Also the music video must be shot in 24 hours, and also must be edited in 24 hours. Lastly it must be a collaboration between the band and the filmmaker. So when making my music video i will have to come up with a plan in order to film in 24 hours and edit in 24 hours.

What types, label and genres of music appears on their website.

The website is only for artists that have not been signed. Artists that have funding and management will not be helped by the website with cost because the point of the website is to help the unsigned artists. The main genre of music is up and coming contemporary music which means it can be indie, pop, rock and many more. The main idea of the website is just to create a interesting and fun and cheap music video which is why the genres of music is so varied. When making my music video i don't really have to make a music video  based on a song with a genera i don't like.

What is the relationship between 99dollarmusicvideo.com, their film maker and music act.

The website clearly states that there must be a close relationship with the film maker and artist whether it is though collaborating together or giving feedback. So there must be a tight bond between the film maker and the artist this will help the music video be the best it could be, due to the fact that the main to job for making a music video are working together. The collaboration between the artist and film maker must have permission to be done and to use the song and should both except to contribute. The website have been very specific to how they want the different party’s to work together, they want them to both put in ideas and be constructive. So overall both sides should have an equal amount of input. Or if the film maker wants full control over the making of the music video, they need to write a formal letter and send it to the artist, asking for their permission to do so. The artist then needs to sign a sort of contract, which then will give the film marker full permission to do what they want, when making the music video.

Which cost are and are not included in the $99

The film maker and artist will be given $99 dollars to make the music video. The cost does not include using you own equipment. But it may include costume and props and even renting of a setting to film in. When making my music video I will have to try and find cheap or free props that i my have already, and use public settings that are free to use.

How does 99dollarmusicvideo.com encourage audience participation?

It is very important that the audience feel as if they are contributing to their favorite artist music. 99 dollar music video encourage audience participation by setting up Facebook and YouTube pages that inform anyone that goes on them, in what they are doing. Also they allows the audience to leave comment on music video, so that they are let the artist and music maker know what they did good or not so good.

Is it possible to make a professional quality music video for $99 ?

I think that you can make a professional quality music video with $99. This is because you just need good camera shots and angles and good lip-syncing, and lots of different settings, All of this is free of cost very little. Even though with just $99 you can’t use expensive props such as a privet jet or expensive car, you can still make the quality of the music video the same as a professional one. An example of a song that was made with the help of $99 music video, and still looks like a professional piece is "Aron King, You Don't know what it is" which is shown below.

Music video techniques

In this task we where asked to talked about artist music video that show good and bad techniques.

Large amount of Cuts (Good)

The music video to Chris Brown "Love more" ft Nicki Minaj has 124. This is a lot for a typical music video, because in a normal music video you expect to see about 100 shots. The intended effect for using a large amount of shot in a music video is to make the music video more exciting, by showing more images in each shot. You will typically see lots of shot in a fast, upbeat song. So a large amount of shots will match the beat of the song. So over all the intended effect of using lots of shot will be to, match the beat of the song and, make the music video more exciting. This technique has been successful because the large amount of shot matches the paces of the song and. The impact and effect it has on the viewers is that, it allows the audience to visually feel the song and visually feel and understand what the atmosphere is like in the location of the music video, which is a club in this music video above. By having lots of cuts in a music video, it represent the artist as being fun and young, which connotes that their music will be very fast and up beat.

Small amount of shots (Bad)

This music video by Whitney Houston "I will always love you" has 88 shot with is a small amount of shot. The intended technique for using little amount of shots could have been due to trying to show the emotion of the song more. So with a little amount of shot it connotes that the song is a very calm song, that you need to listen to very carefully to understand what the meaning is. But the technique may not have been successful to some people because they might get bored in watching the same shot for a long time, which will put them of the song and even the artist. The impact this has on the audience is that it may make them get bored watching the music video which could lead to them disliking the artist. By having a small amount of shots it could represent the artist as been, an artist that sings slow love songs, that have a lot of meaning in it.

Special effects (Good)

In this music video by Rihanna "Rude Boy" it has lot of special effects. This are very interesting to look at. The intended effect of using special effects in a music video is to make the music video interesting to look and, and to show things that you cant really do in real life. So in this music video Rihanna used lots of different colors and reflections of herself in order to draw the audience into the music video so that they keep on watching it. She also used special effects to do somethings she cant really do in real life. At 3:11 Rihanna is standing next to a lion. Special effects allowed her to do this. This technique has been successful because it does not over the power the audience and make them keep watching due to the abstract images she has used. The impact and effect it has on the viewers is that, it make the audience carry on watching because their is a lot of colors and images to take in. Also due to the song being very up beat it will make the audience want to dance to the song which will make the audience enjoy the song better. By having good special effects in a music video it can represent the artist as being artistic and outgoing, because special effects will will either make a music video look good or very bad. So by an artist using them it will show confidence.

Special effects(Bad)
In the music video from Kanye West "All of the lights" He used Special effects in music video. This is an example of bad use of special effects. This is because even though the effects of lot of lights matches the song lyrics, it is too many effects at once and to much flashing lights, and the audience gets distracted by all of the lights. instead of actually listening to the lyrics that, have a strong meaning to it. The intended effect is for all of the effects which are lights, to match the song title and meaning. The technique was not effective because it distracts the the audience from the meaning of the song, because all the lights, are to over powering when looking at them. By using this kind of effect it represents the artist as being very artist and their music as unique and up tempo.

Cutting to the beat (Good)
In this music video by Olly Murs "Dance with me tonight" it show good use of cutting to the beat. The intended effect of this technique to to make the song to song better and also to make the actually music video look better. The technique has been success because Olly has listened to the beat of the song carefully and has used make his cuts.  From 1:20 - 1:40 you will hear a drum being hit, and each time it is hit their is a cut. By doing this it allows the audience to hear the beat of the song much better, and it also allows the audience to enjoy watching the music video, because it matches the song. By cutting to the beat it represents the artist as someone who takes time in making music and who has been going so for a long time or works with people who has.

Cutting to the beat (Bad)
In this music video by Jordin Sparks "One step at a time" it shows bad use of cutting to the beat. The technique was not successful because as you hear the beat their is not real cuts that match it. from 0:20-0:40 you hear a a drum being hit every 1 second, so to match the beat a cuts should happen every time the drum it hit, but in the 20 seconds i looked at i only counted 11 cuts. This mean that the artist did not cut to the beat. The impact this has on the viewers is that it does not allows them to hear the beat of a song a cleanly as if she was cutting to the beat. By not cutting to the beat it represents the artist as being inexperienced, and has no real understanding of music.

Varied camera language (Good)
In this music video by Drake "Find your love" it shows good use of varied camera language. This is because it has lot of different shot types and angles. The intended effect of this technique is to make the music video look more interesting and to connotes Drakes emotion at the a specific time. The technique has been success because, it uses lots of different shot type and angle all time a small amount of time. which brings the story of the music video to life and makes it more interesting to watch. In the first 20 seconds of the music video we see a over the shoulder shot, long shot, establishing shot and a close up. By having varied camera language it keep the audience interested in the music video, which will keep them watching. By doing this is represents the artist as being very creative and connotes that they are passionate about music and love to telling a story thought the use of the camera.

Varied camera language (Bad)
In this music by Justin Bieber ft Nicki Minaj "Beauty and the beast" it shows bad use of camera language. This is because for most of the music video Justin is holding the camera himself. The intended effect of this was to make the music video seem more personal, and a way of Justin to being closer to his fans. But this did not work to well because after a while I felt that the same camera shot got really boring, and did not allow me to appreciate the song and music video. The impact this has on the audience is that seems as if they are watching the same things and it does not tell a story really well, so even if Justin was trying to tell a story, it does not get across to the audience because it just as a few shots in the music video. By having very little camera language it represents the artist as being very different and still someone who is leaning what type of music videos are the best to do.

Green Screen (Good)
In this music video by Chris Brown "With you" It shows good use of green screen. The intended effect of using this technique is to make the artist look like they are somewhere, but they are really not. At 2:40 till 3:20 we see bits where Chris Brown is sitting in the middle of the road and cars at high speed are going past him. Green screen allowed him to do this. The technique has been successful because it looks very really and you don't see any green screen. The impact his has on the audience is that it get them thinking, about how the artist did it. It also brings the lyrics that the artist is signing at that moment to life and it get across to the audience much better. In this moment Chris is singing about how he would die is he doesn't have the girl he wants. So by him saying it in the road it connotes that he will get run over it he does not get the girl. By doing this it represents the artist as being very creative

Green screen (Bad)
In this music video by Lil Wayne ft Nicki Minaj "Knockout" it shows a bad use of green screen. The intended effect in this music video is for Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj to be in a locker room and a boxing ring. The technique was not successful because it look very fake and it the setting they are in is too small in regards to their height. At 0:28 both artists are standing next to a locker, and they look really tall, which make it look fake. The impact this has on the viewers is that it make the audience fell uncomfortable and it does not really get the meaning of the song across to the audience so they don't understand the meaning of the song.  By doing this it represents the artist as being not very artistic and creative. Also it makes the artist look like they have not really thought about the music video properly, and it looks very rushed.

Lip-syncing (Good)
In this music video by Nicki Minaj "Freedom" it shows good lip-syncing. The Intended effect of this technique is for it to look like the artist is actually singing in the music video, when really they are not. The technique has been successful because it really looks like Nicki Minaj it actually signing in the music video. From 0:01 till 1:00 in some shots Nicki is standing outside in the song with black hair. In these shots it the technique has really been successful, this is because she shows emotion when singing and she uses her hand movements to make it look like she is really singing. The impact this has on the audience is that it make them feel like are actually listening to the artist live and it allows them to be drawn into the actually music video more. By doing this technique properly is represents the artist as being very talented, and connotes that the artist spends a lot of time and care in their music video.

Lip-syncing (Bad)
In this music video by Nelly ft Kelly Rowland "Dilemma" it shows bad use of lip-syncing. The technique has not been successful because in some part of the music video the artist lips do not match the sound. At 1:08 till 1:13 when Nelly is singing his lips don't match the sounds. Also sometimes Kelly Rowland does not shows enough emotion when singing, which just reinforces the fact that she is lip-syncing. at 0:32 till 1:08 Kelly is just sitting on a step and just moving her lips. she has not hand movements and only a little head movement. This does not sell the idea that she is actually singing. The impact this has on the audience is that it makes them fell like they are watching to different things, which will lead to them not understanding the music video, because the video and song will not match. By doing this it represents the artist as being unprofessional and lad back with their music.

Styles and Conventions of music videos

In this task I have been asked to research styles and conventions on a music video. Style is the type of music video it is, such as Concert, Narrative,Animation and Intertextuality. Conventions are typically things you will see in a style or genera of music, such as in the genera of Hip-Hop typically you will see Money, cars, and girls

Concert Based Music video

The first one I’m going to talk about is a Concert bases music video. One example of this is “Swedish House Mafia, Don't you worry child" This is because the music video is filmed on location at the group's final British performance at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes. The music institution would use this style for a music video due to many reasons. First of all it will allow them to promote their concert. It will allow the audience to see what the artist concert is like. At 1:22, 1:27, 1:29 you see images of the crowd jumping and having a fun time. This might then make the audience want to go to one of their concert which will make the institution and the artist money. The impact this style of music video has on an artist is that it make the music video much more realistic and allows the audience to see what one of the artist concerts is like, without having to go to one in real life. At 1:08 and 1:20 you see Swedish House Mafia getting ready to perform. I could use this style in my music video by have my main artist/ band walk onto stage and show them getting ready, just like in this music video.

                                                                 Narrative based Music Video

The second one I am going to talk about is a Narrative based music video. One example of this style of music video is "Drake we're going home" This is because the music video has a story within it. In the video Drake plays a kingpin who gets his lover kidnapped by a rival gang. Throughout the video, Drake does everything in his power to rescue her. The music institution would use this style for a music video due to many reasons. One reason is that it allows the institution and artist to get across the meaning of the song better. At 3:54- 3:56 we hear Drake say "Just hold on we're going home" which is a line from the song. Because of the music video the audience fully understand what the line means. It is a line that Drake is saying to his girlfriend, to let her know that he is coming for her, and that they will be going home very soon. Also the institution might use a narrative as a style to do a music video as because it will allow them to make the music video very meaning full allowing to connect with the audience, which will make the music video more popular around the world, which could win it awards. In my music video I could use this style, by showing a clear and meaning full story, by having an opening sequence in my song, just like Drake does from 0:00 till 2:30. This will allow the audience to understand the base of the story line.

                                                                  Animation Based Music Video.

The third one I am going to talk about is a animation based music video. One example of this is Kanye West Good morning. This is because the music video is about a drop out bear, Kanye West long time mascot who appears on the cover of Graduation. The story chronicles Dropout Bear overcoming various obstacles in an effort to reach his college campus in time for his graduation ceremony. The institution might use this style of music video, due to the fact that it will allow them to make the music video have anything they want in it, that you might not get in a real music video. For example at 0:57 you see lots of cars that are floating in the air.The impact this style of music video will have on the audience, will make the audience carry on watching it, because animation, is not a very popular style of music video. So when they do see an animated music video they it will be a new experience for them so they will enjoy it more. If i was going to use this style in my music video I would use it in order to push boundaries, and do things that I cant do in real life. for example I would make my artist fly across a city.

                                                                Intertextuality as Pastiches

The third style I'm going to talk about is Intertextuality as pastiches one example of a music that uses this style is Taylor Swift "Love Story ". Intertextuality is when a music video is referencing another media outlet, much as another movie or song. In Taylor Swift "Love Story" she is referencing the movie of Romeo and Juliet. At 1:05-1:09 Taylor sings "Romeo take me somewhere where we can be alone,..." This is a clean reference to Romeo and Juliet, because she says "Romeo" The institution might use this style for a music video, in order to get a cleaner meaning a cross to the audience. Because Romeo and Juliet was such a power story, by Taylor Swift using it in her music video connotes to the audience that she such really be in love wit the man she is singing about. The impact it will have on the audience will be that, they can enjoy the music video  more because they understand the true meaning of it much better, to if the artist had never referenced, another media. If I was going to use this style in my music video I would fine a movie that has a strong meaning in it, that I am trying to get across.

 Intertextuality as Parody

The next one i am going to talk about is intertextuality as parody. This is when a music outlet mocks another. So in this case, when a music video takes the mick out of another media outlet. An example of this is Robin Thicke "Blurred lines" In the music video at 2:31 they sing about how Robin Thicke is being a pervert and is using too many hash tags. The institution might do a music video in this style, in order to make people to laugh and to say what a lot of people are thinking. The impact this style has on the audience is that allows the audience to look at the song in another way, and it allows them to spot things that they don't really see in the actually music video. If I was going to use parody in my music video, i would have to make sure it is popular at the moment in time, so people can understand the jokes I put in my music video.

                                                                       Interpretative based music video

The firth style i am going to talk about is Interpretative. This is when a video interprets the visuals directly into a story that matches the lyrics. An example of this is Rebecca Black "Friday". When she is singer some of the words she say, the physical object is shown on screen. For example at 0:17 till 0:19 she says "Seven a.m., waking up in the morning" when she is saying this, the audience see an alarm clock that is on 7 am, and Rebecca Black waking up in the morning. The institution might use this style to make a music video, because it will allow the artist to get across the meaning on her lyrics. It will make the song more cleaner for the audience so, they are them more likely to buy the song, which will make money for the record label and artist. The impact this style has on the audience is that, it will allow the audience to understand the lyrics of the song better, because it will show them a image of what the artist is talking about. If i was going to use this style in my music video I would potentially use it in order to get across to my audience what I am saying.

                                                                         Impressionist based music video

The next style I am going to talk about is Impressionist. This is when imagery matches the mood and pace of the song, but not necessarily the lyrics. An example of is style of music video is Nicki Minaj "Pound the alarm" This is because the music video is showing Nicki in her home town, taking part in a carnival. The Pace of the song matches the mood of the song, which is fun and energetic, but the lyrics of the song do not talk about a carnival or dancing. The institution might use this style of music, in order to make the audience think about the lyrics more and how it relates back to the music video. Also they might use it in order to make the mood of the song clearer. So in this music music video the mood is energetic so because it is shown very clearly, people will relate the song to excitement, which will allow the song to become known better by people. The impact this style has on the audience is that, it will make allow people to fell the beat and pace of the song better, which allows them audience to like the song much better.
If i was going to use this style in my music video I would, probably use it in a up beat song, just like Nicki Minaj did in "Pound the alarm" This is because if i did a slow sad song, people would want to listen to the lyrics more in order to feel the emotions of the artist.
                                                              Surrealism/Abstract based music video

The last style i am going to talk about is Surrealism/Abstract. This is when words that feature the element of surprise unexpected juxtaposition and non sequitur. A music video with this style is Lady Gaga "You and I" This is because the song is about love, but you have got unsuspected images in the shot that do not match. At 22 seconds the video cuts to a scary ice cream man, which does not connote love in anyway. The institution might use this style, so that the music video is different to other music videos and it gets people talking about it due to the fact that the music video does not match the lyrics. The impact this has on the audience is that it will get them thinking about it and re watching it, in order to understand the music video. If i was going to use this style in my music video, i would make sure that I very strong opposing shots, to what ever type of song i do, in order for the abstract ism to stand out very clearly.
